Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, as amended (HIPAA)

In August 2002, the federal government published a final Privacy Rule at 45 C.F.R. Parts 160-164 for the purpose of satisfying the privacy requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability of 1996. This rule was effective April 14, 2003 for large group health plans and on April 14, 2004 for small group health plans. In February 2003, the federal government published a final Security Rule at 45 C.F.R. 160, 162, and 164. This rule (the Security Rule) was effective April 21, 2005 for large group health plans and on April 21, 2006 for small health plans.
